Pirelli Cup, Las Vegas - November 4th– 6th, 2011

The VI Fitness racing team headed down to Las Vegas for the final race of the Pirelli Cup season. We had sold our championship winning 2008 car a day after winning the championship and so we decided to go with our new car. We purchased a 2011 Cup Car which we will run in the Platinum class next year and so it was important to sort it out and see what we had. The car was not delivered in as promised condition so the team was left scrambling to solve those issues prior to the race. Friday practice was rained out which meant we had to qualify the car with only one session under our belts. Dave had indicated the car was handling very oddly so the team was working hard to sort things out. Somehow we still managed to put the car 3rd on grid so not too bad considering. The race on Saturday would be a night race and the race on Sunday a morning race so should be interesting.

Saturday night we headed our under the lights at Vegas Speedway. While the oval portion of the track was well lit the inside road course portion was not. We would come into turn one at around 170 mph brake to about 40 mph and head off into the dark. Adding to the problem was the windshield was so pitted it was very difficult to see out of in the dark. The apexes were difficult to see as was the edge of the track. Down into turn one we charged and Dave found himself in 3rd. Coming up to turn 8 Walsh braked a little late and we were by and up into second. Around 8 the strap broke on the cool box and the madness began. There was now a 30 lb missile bouncing around in the car with Dave not only having to drive an unfamiliar car but fend the box off as well. Halfway through the race coming into turn 8 the box knocked Dave's hand off the shifter and Walsh was back by and under us for second. We continued to push forward and as the laps were winding down Walsh got a flat moving us back into second where we finished the race. Weirdest race ever for sure. Good result though.

Sunday morning we headed out for qualifying and with some more changes made to the car we managed to qualify second. At the start of the race we went a little wide into one and the whole field freight trained by. Now we were in last. Dave just put his head down and started picking cars off one by one. As the race was coming to a close we had worked our way up to third and were closing in on the second place car when we picked up a flat which knocked us back to fourth. Oh well, that’s racing!

Thank you to everyone who helped us this season especially Stan, Gunter and Jeff and Jeff we couldn't have done it without you. Stan was also named the Oregon Region Crew Chief of the year this season which was a little icing on the cake. Congrats Stan!!!.
